Comet impacts are very rare, cyclical events. How could a civilization guarantee that later generations will take heed? Our modern society barely recognizes the precious spacetime period we live in today.
Consider that the majority of people pay no attention to floating Space-Mountains, also known as Comets. The best way to avoid an impact, is to have as much warning time as possible. And remember, scale is the problem.
